As motorbike intelligence accelerates, the traditional body control module (BCM) is undergoing a key change. Industry data shows that by 2025, the integration of high-end motorbike BCM systems will increase by 300%, becoming a ‘nerve centre’ connecting digital instruments, internet terminals and body hardware, and strictly controlling data security risks while safeguarding basic functions.
Functional limitations of traditional BCM
Early motorbike BCMs could only realise basic electrical control:
Lighting system switch
Anti-theft lock trigger
Power distribution management
The discrete structure led to complex wiring and inefficient troubleshooting. Chen Feng, director of electronic architecture at Spring Power, pointed out.
Three core directions for intelligent upgrades
1. Data Gateway Hub
The new generation BCM integrates CAN/LIN bus protocol:
Real-time collection of body data (camber/tire pressure/battery status)
Push streamlined safety information (e.g. ABS status icons) to digital instruments
Provision of desensitised data (position/fault codes) for internet-connected terminals
*Example: The BCM of the BMW R 1300 GS filters more than 20 body signals and outputs only 5 core riding parameters to the instrumentation.
2. Security upgrades
Dual-frequency anti-theft authentication: BLE+RFID dual authentication triggers the engine lock.
Tilt angle linkage protection: Automatically cuts off fuel pump power in the event of a fall.
OTA safety verification: Firmware upgrade passed ASIL-B level functional safety certification.
Compliance point: All protection operations need to be authorised by the rider, and the system will not take over the control of the vehicle.
3. Intelligent Energy Efficiency Management
Learning riding habits through internet data:
Predictive adjustment of charging and discharging strategies (e.g. automatic power reserve before long-distance riding).
Automatic switching of light modes (Tunnel GPS location link).
Honda 2024 NT1100 has been tested to reduce circuit losses by 12%.
Industry Co-operation and Standard Building
Targeting data security challenges:
Hardware-isolated design: physical partitioning of body control and Internet communications
Data desensitised transmission: location information accuracy limited to 100 metres
Compliance with EU 168/2013 certification: Dual protection of electromagnetic compatibility and network security
Qianjiang Motorcycle Research Institute stresses: "BCM does not store user bio-information, and location data needs to be shared with secondary authorisation from the rider.
