Electronic turning point: the popularity of LCD screen
After 2010, full LCD instruments gradually replaced mechanical structures. Its core breakthrough lies in:
Customised interface (supports multi-mode switching for navigation/entertainment/vehicle status)
High-precision graphic rendering (tyre pressure monitoring visualization, 3D map projection)
Linkage with ADAS system (lane departure warning icon, blind zone monitoring tips)
AI Enablement: New Stage of Scene Intelligence
The current technology iteration focuses on three major directions:
► Scene-aware intelligence
The cockpit domain controller fuses navigation, weather and vehicle data to automatically switch between snow/night and other exclusive interfaces. Ideal Car's latest models have realised dynamically enhanced road marking display on the dashboard according to the visibility.
► Multimodal Interaction Upgrade
Voice assistant is linked with the dashboard, and important notifications are safely prompted in the form of text + icon (e.g. ‘Construction ahead, lane change is recommended’), avoiding the driver's line of sight from being shifted.
► OTA Continuous Evolution
Instrument themes and function modules can be updated through the cloud. The technical director of Xiaopeng Automobile revealed, ‘The dashboard energy consumption prediction function will be online in 2024 to optimise the accuracy of the range display based on historical data.’
Safety and compliance go hand in hand
It is worth noting that the industry strictly follows the principle of ‘information classification’:
Entertainment information is not allowed to be displayed on the main driver's dashboard
Driver assistance status alerts must comply with ISO 26262 functional safety standards.
Warning signals retain traditional cognitive symbols such as flashing red.
Future Prospects
Chen Wei, an expert from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), emphasises: ‘The next generation of digital instruments will deeply integrate AR-HUD technology, projecting key information such as navigation arrows on the windshield, but the core driving parameters will remain in the instrumentation area to ensure focused attention.’
